The Lovoy Family

More than a century after their family first arrived in America, the LoVoys continue to honor their Italian roots as members of IAHSBham, keeping traditions alive for the next generation.

Sempre Famiglia

The LoVoy (originally LoVoi) family story begins in the hill towns of Sicily—BISACQUINO and San Giuseppe Jato. In the early 1900s, members of the LoVoi and Caiola families came to the United States in search of opportunity, eventually finding their home in Birmingham. Like so many Italian immigrants at the turn of the 20th century, they arrived through Ellis Island. Their journey was not without hardship, but it was defined by perseverance and a deep belief in building a better life for the next generation.

That legacy took root in Birmingham through Sam J. LoVoy (Saverio Joseph LoVoi), who, together with his wife Phyllis (Caiola), built local businesses and raised a family grounded in service, education, and community. His son, John McDavid LoVoy, born and raised in Birmingham, carried those values forward, shaping a life that blended Italian heritage with Southern roots. John and his wife raised three children, surrounded by a large extended family of cousins and relatives, where Sunday lunches and time together remain a cherished tradition.
